The menu is a rich representation of traditional Mexican cuisine. Dishes like Tlayuda—a large, thin, and crispy tortilla layered with beans, cheese, cabbage, and your choice of meats like asada or chorizo—are a highlight. This dish alone offers a satisfying and shareable experience for diners who appreciate culinary heritage. Similarly, the Tacos de Tripa and Tacos de Pescado showcase well-balanced flavors and fresh ingredients, which many reviewers have praised for their seasoning and generous portions.

Besides the tacos, other specials such as Menudo, Chilaquiles, and freshly prepared Fried Fish illustrate the kitchen’s commitment to authenticity. Drinks like the Michelada complement the food well, adding a refreshing twist to the overall meal. Customer notes reflect that the restaurant manages to blend affordability with quality, a balance that can be hard to find in higher-end Mexican dining spots.

Service is consistently described as fast, polite, and friendly, lending to a welcoming atmosphere where guests feel heard and appreciated. Cleanliness and care in presentation further add to the positive dining experience, making Tierra y Libertad a reliable choice for both casual diners and those seeking an authentic taste of Mexico in central Indiana.

Whether you’re on the hunt for a hearty Tlayuda, perfectly seasoned tacos, or comforting dishes like menudo, Tierra y Libertad delivers authenticity in every bite without pretense. It’s a heartfelt recommendation for anyone wanting to explore true Mexican cuisine beyond the familiar Tex-Mex boundaries.

I've been meaning to post a review of this place because they have been perfect every single time. I ordered the Tacos Al Pastor, and my daughter gets the steak tacos. Normally we have 3 each but they smelled so good we couldn't wait, which is why my tacos are a mess. The ingredients are always fresh, the tacos are very full, and very well seasoned. They are also well worth the price. The service is fast, polite, and friendly. I can't honestly comment on too much of the other menus items I've been stuck on the tacos, but there is a large selection of items.

Real authentic Mexican food is finally in Shellyville. This joint is called Tierra Y Libertad Mexican Restaurant. I'm talking menudo, empanadas, enmoladas, tacos, tostadas, gorditas, you name it. If you want Tex mex or arroz con pollo, do not come here as you will not find it here. This is as authentic as it gets and honestly everything we had was fantastic. It is most definitely a hole in the wall type of joint so nothing fancy on the inside other than the food. We were amazed at the amount of variety they had to offer. The owners were very nice and accommodating. We got recommend to try out the Tlayudas which are essentially large thin and crunchy tortillas filled with whatever meat, beans, cheese, and cabbage. I got the asada option and my sister got the chorizo. They were so tasty and honestly huge. One Tlayuda is probably good for two to be honest but I powered through one myself. My dad ordered some tacos, one Al pastor, tripe, and suadero. He thought they were very good. It's nice to know that there's something like this in Shelbyville as there seems to be an abundance of Tex mex style food here. Will come back and try some other offerings from their menu
